I’ve had a Lumia 800 for quite some time now and as part of our Lumia Windows Phone coverage, I thought it’d be a good idea to list the apps I use frequently on my Windows Phone device.
Firstly, I love the Nokia Lumia range as they combine a great display with powerful specs and fluid OS and all of these make for a good app experience. Before we forget, this is just 10 apps chosen from 90,000 on the Windows Phone Marketplace (over 100,000 now actually) so this list is the ones I use, but it may not be the best apps for your use.

Looking for a good Windows Phone Twitter client? Carbon for Windows Phone is definitely one of my favourite Twitter apps. It’s sleek, fits the Metro UI and supports live tiles as well as push notifications. Everything you could ask for really.
Cost: £1.49 ~ Free trial available
The Barclays Premier League season may be over for another year but during the course of the season, this apps is definitely key to me as it provides goal updates (usually soon after they’re scored) as well as push notifications, video previews and reviews of all the games.
I’m a massive Formula 1 fan and this app is essential to my Lumia as it basically gives me all the F1 info I need! It includes a race schedule, live updates, driver and constructors table standings and information about races and race tracks.
Cost: Free (Pro version: £0.99)
Live Tiles News
This pretty much does what it says in the name, delivering live news via a live tile direct to your homescreen. You can choose from several categories, including world news, science, politics, technology and UK specific news.
Cost: Free (Pro version: £0.79) – a special mention goes to the developers as all ads revenue/ app sales revenue will go to Charity!
Next Gen Reader
This is my app of choice to keep up to date with all my RSS feeds through Google Reader. Quite simply FANTASTIC and we’ll be covering this app in much more detail in the next few days. I love this app and it is by far the best app for Google Reader in my opinion.
It supports sharing, viewing of videos (via YouTube) and includes push notifications and a live tile for your homescreen.
Cost: £1.49, free trial available
Sky Sports News
This one is for all the sports fans out there as it gives you access to Sky Sports News Metro UI style! Need I say more? Does what it says on the tin and simply the best for Sports on the Go!
Tango Video Calls
This one disappeared for a while but I use it quite a lot to interact with people abroad who are also using Tango. This has saved me quite a lot of money and call quality is pretty good as well. Works via your internet connection.
This is quite a handy app that gives one click shortcuts to widely used features (such as WiFi, Bluetooth, Cellular etc) by making them available in one click via a live tile on your homescreen, that also updates to show connection status.
WP Shortcut Tiles
This works really similar to Toggle, but includes several additional features (focusing around connectivity, e.g. switching from cellular to wifi data etc) but doesn’t include the updated homescreen live tile. I generally use Toggle and check this app when I can’t find something in particular.
I’m always buying stuff online from other countries or transferring money around the world or planning a holiday. For any of these, this app is simply invaluable and I use it at least 4 times a day to see what a particular exchange rate is.
As with all currency apps, it automatically updates and allows you to enter a particular amount in a set currency to do a conversion on.
That’s my favourite apps on my Nokia Lumia 800 Windows Phone smartphone. What are yours? Let us know in the comments below.
