Syria has joined the list of countries worldwide who have chosen to ban smartphones, citing national security interests. This time however, Syria has chosen to ban sales of the Apple iPhone in a bid to curb protesters communicating via social networks.
The German Press Agency first learned of the ban after being contacted by protestors, and the agency confirmed that a ban is effect in the country.
Syria’s finance ministry customs department allegedly said, “Authorities are to ‘warn anyone against using the iPhone in Syria’. The German Press Agency also said that it’s unclear whether the alleged statement from Syria’s government is legitimate.
According to the BBC, Syria’s government has also banned imports of Apple’s iPhone, whilst other smartphones were not subject to the ban.
